La Rochelle, and its festival LES FRANCOFOLIES happening in July
“Marvellous and rebellious” said the Rochellais about their city. La Rochelle (80 000 inhabitants) is a very example of a maritime city. Situated on the inner side of a bay open onto the sea of Perthuis and protected by the isles of Ré, Aix and Oléron.
Founded in the 10th century on a rocky platform in the middle of marshlands it was a fishing village and became a port as early as the 12th century.

What to see ?

What to do ?  Well first go and visit the Old part.. hang on the harbour, enjoy the terrasse and a drink viewing the saling boat..   Don't forget to also go to LES MINIMES, more modern harbour "Marina" one of the biggest in France.

For sure take a day to go to ILE DE RE an island near La ROchelle, (catch a local bus to go there) and hang on the Beach visit St Martin en Ré..  this Island is perfect to Bicycle.. it's all flat.. The light  is just perfect for artists..go for sure check this island
